Amazon Sidewalk Has Some Spooked – NBC 7 San Diego

On Tuesday, Amazon Sidewalk net For compatible Echo devices. This network is designed to connect Amazon devices, so you don’t have to rely on the Internet.

“The idea is that if one of your neighborhood networks goes down or you need to increase your bandwidth, you can share it with nearby devices that are compatible with Sidewalk,” said Gap Intelligence handsets and smart speakers. Analyst Scott Peterson said. “This is a way to network your device outside your home.”

According to Peterson, two devices, each connected to the Internet, can now communicate with each other when they need help.

“In the event of a power outage, security cameras can stay online and track thieves,” says Peterson.

Amazon products such as Tile are already running on the Sidewalk network. For example, Peterson said it helps track escaped pets.

“There are benefits to this, such as finding lost or stolen items, and even pets on this system,” says Peterson. “This is the connected city we saw in the future.”

But even without neighbors, networks can be useful, Peterson said.

“We all had devices around WiFi,” says Peterson. “Like an Echo device upstairs or a Ring camera on the other side of the house.”

According to Peterson, there are immediate advantages, but the real advantage is the new network infrastructure that Amazon can use to develop new technologies.

“I think this is one of the solutions to a problem that doesn’t exist, but in the future it will be essential to many of our actions in our neighborhood,” Peterson said.

Still, some are concerned about how Amazon will deploy Sidewalk.

“The concern about this is lack of transparency and understanding,” Peterson said.

In a statement to NBC 7, Amazon explained how it protects people’s privacy.

Protecting customer privacy and security is the basis of how Amazon Sidewalk is built. Sidewalk is designed with a multi-layered privacy and security structure to protect data moving over the network and maintain customer safety and control. For example, Sidewalk Bridge owners do not receive information about devices owned by other users connected to Sidewalk, and Amazon cannot see the content of messages sent via Sidewalk. You can disable or enable Sidewalk at any time using the Ring or Alexa app. Customers can find out more in the following ways: Access privacy and security white papers..

Peterson said Sidewalk is something consumers need to be aware of.

“This is a setting we should actively look for as a current owner, and all new owners will be automatically opt-in,” says Peterson.

When it comes to mesh network ideas like Sidewalk, other companies like Apple have already done this with products like Airtag. Airtag rings Apple devices you don’t own.

“That is, walking downtown with your iPhone and 10 friends is exactly like 10 friends staying in one place,” says Peterson. ..
