Hawaii-Based Destroyer Docks In San Diego After COVID-19 Outbreak

The Hawaii-based guided-missile destroyer USS Chafee docked in San Diego last week after a major outbreak of COVID-19 among its crew.

According to media reports, as many as 40 sailors out of a crew of 350 have been infected.

But U.S. 3rd Fleet officials told Navy Times that no sailors have been hospitalized and the ship remains operational.

The Pearl Harbor-based ship was headed to San Diego for a Surface Warfare Advanced Tactical Training, or SWATT, session. It docked at Naval Base San Diego last Saturday.

Other Navy ships that have seen coronavirus outbreaks include the destroyer USS Michael Murphy last November and the San Diego-based aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt last spring.
