Witnesses of the May 17 brawl told deputies of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office that the incident began when someone allegedly cut in line for the surf ride at Kalahari Resort water park, WKYC reported.
Footage of the incident released on May 19 showed the park’s lifeguards attempting to break up the encounter until one of the guests threw a punch at another person, escalating the engagement.
A woman, identified as 23-year-old Brittany Cabay of Flint, Michigan, can be seen in the video punching an unidentified man before he picked her up and threw her on the ground, causing her to bleed from the head and momentarily losing consciousness.
Medical responders from the park arrived moments later and encountered 24-year-old Zackary Colzin of Sterling, Michigan. An EMT said he was forced to tackle Colzin because the latter became violent and started punching him, local newspaper the Sandusky Register reported. Colzin then hit his head on the ground and became unconscious from the tackle.
Colzin regained consciousness when police arrived, but officials said he began swearing and punching one of the officers, as per WKYC. He was stunned with a Taser and placed under arrest. Colzin reportedly continued to swear and yell racial slurs as he was carried outside the park, where he also threatened self-harm.
Cabay was arrested after she refused medical treatment and allegedly made death threats against officers and paramedics inside the water park, additionally informing them she “was in school to be a police officer.”
Both Colzin and Cabay were taken to Firelands Hospital to be treated for the injuries. Police claimed the two were drunk “based off the strong odor of intoxicants coming from their breaths,” the report said. They were then transported to Erie County Jail.
Both were arraigned on May 18 in Huron Municipal Court, where Colzin was charged with assault on a police officer, assault on an EMT, persistent disorderly conduct while intoxicated, resisting arrest and failure to disclose personal information.
Cabay, meanwhile, was charged with persistent disorderly conduct while intoxicated, aggravated menacing and failure to disclose personal information.
Authorities also pointed out that Colzin had an outstanding arrest warrant in Michigan for motor vehicle theft. A holder was placed on him while his charges in Ohio were being sorted out.
The person seen in the video throwing Cabay to the ground is expected to be charged as well, WOIO reported.
“We want everybody to come and have a good time, but we want them to be responsible with their consumption of alcohol,” Erie County Sheriff Paul Sigsworth was quoted as saying.
“We’ll continue to respond to 911 calls out there, whatever they may be, and if people are intoxicated to the point where they’re causing a disturbance, they’re gonna be arrested,” he added.
Police are still investigating the incident, according to WKYC.
