A man was struck and killed by an Amtrak Surfliner train Monday morning in Carlsbad, sheriff’s officials said.
It happened about 9:20 a.m. on the tracks near the Carlsbad Village Station, where the track speed is 90 mph and the train was headed north at 84 mph, according to deputies from the Sheriff’s Department’s transit enforcement unit.
The man who was struck died at the scene, authorities said. His identity was unknown as of Monday afternoon.
The deadly crash affected rail traffic in the North County area for several hours, prompting the North County Transit District to send buses to transport train passengers.
Sheriff’s officials did not provide more information about the circumstances of the crash, but asked anyone with information about it to call the department’s non-emergency line at (858) 565-5200.
