The proprietors behind The Rose, South Park’s treasured wine bar and bottle shop, are heading to North Park for their next venture. Owners Chelsea Coleman and Rae Gurne just posted early signage for Mabel’s Gone Fishing on 30th Street, a can’t-open-soon-enough bistro, oyster and gin bar that’s currently scheduled to come ashore in early 2020.

Working with local architect/design team Jonathan Stevens and Jason Lane on the space and Alison Dunlevey for branding, the bistro and bar will be paired with a 150-square-foot retail bottle shop called Rosette that will stock natural wines and organic spirits.

There will be seasonal entrees, small plates, and an oyster bar as well as a happy hour highlighting pintxos, the popular snacks served in bars throughout Northern Spain. Mabel’s Gone Fishing will also offer weekend brunch as well as gin and tonics and other gin-based cocktails featuring local gin and a list of all natural wines curated by The Rose’s wine buyer Katie FawkesMoore.

It’s named for Coleman’s cherished dog, who stars in the restaurant’s origin story as a beach-going adventuress who gets swept away in a whirlpool and learns to fish and feast on seafood. The Mabel of the legend still sends postcards from various beach towns along the Mediterranean, from Portugal and Italy to France, Croatia, and Israel, which will inform the bistro’s menu along with regional ingredients grown in San Diego’s own Mediterranean climate.
