The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced last year that they would be stepping back from their royal duties. Camilla Tominey, associate editor of The Daily Telegraph, said the final straw for Prince Harry and Markle was after the Queen denied their request to have their own household like Prince William and Middleton.

“At that point, Harry and Meghan want their own office like the Cambridges have. They wanted their own office to run out of Windsor, out of Frogmore Cottage, where they were living at the time,” Tominey said in the ITV documentary “Harry and William: What Went Wrong?”

“And it’s at that point the Queen and Prince Charles then sweep in and say ‘no, we will manage your affairs’ and in a way that’s the final straw because once again the Sussexes are saying ‘why can’t we have what the Cambridges are having? We should be on an equal footing.'”

Twitter users have mixed opinions on the issue. Some slammed Prince Harry and Markle for wanting to be equal to the future king and queen.

“Just read a headline about how the last straw for Harry and Meghan was that they weren’t equal to William. Of course they’re not equal because William is going to be King and Kate is going to be Queen and the two of them never will be!” one tweeted.

“Apart from not being trustworthy, they arent & never will be equal to a future heir, why can’t Harry understand this now, he has known this all his life, Meghan should have been fully aware of this before even their engagement. She probably was, but thought she could change it,” another added

Meanwhile, many also defended the Sussexes. One didn’t believe that it was the reason why they left the royal family. Another said Markle shouldn’t be blamed because Prince Harry had always known that fact since he was a child.

“Above excerpt is false. Harry’s request for independence was mainly for the snooping. He was looking for ways to keep Meghan away from those who, obviously, didn’t like her. Truth be told,” one commented.

“No, it’s totally a fair point! In a normal family, everyone is considered equal. But in royal or aristocratic families, primogeniture is king! You can’t really blame Meghan here (not at this point) but Harry… Seriously, he’s grown up with this, he should KNOW how it works!” another netizen wrote.

Meanwhile, royal historian Robert Lacey claimed in the new version of his book “Battle of Brothers” that it was Prince William who initiated to have separate households from the Sussexes. The Duke of Cambridge reportedly “wished to be separated from Meghan” after the bullying allegation against the duchess.
