The issue of Action Comics #1 was bought for a record-breaking price of $3.25 million, Comic Connect announced Tuesday. The 1938 copy narrowly bested the previous record of another comic, which was sold in 2014 for slightly over $3.2 million, CBS New York reported.

The rare comic book, according to Vincent Zurzolo, “really is the beginning of the superhero genre.” Zurzolo is Comic Connect’s COO who brokered the private sale.

The 1938 issue featured many of the humble beginnings of the superhero, including how Superman came to Earth from another planet and went by the name of Clark Kent. This particular copy of Action Comics #1 has quite a history when it was first sold at a whopping price of $1.5 million in 2010. In 2017, it was sold again for a higher price of $1.75 million.

The seller of the Action Comics #1 bought the issue back in 2018 for slightly more than $2 million and was able to sell it this year for about a million dollars more, according to Firstpost.

“There’s no comic book that you could value higher in terms of a comic book than Action Comics #1,” Zurzolo said.

The COO also added that although there were hundreds of thousands of copies initially published, the comic is estimated to only have about 100 copies existing today with varying conditions. The particular copy sold recently is one of the best kept ones.

“With all collectibles on the rise, plus cryptocurrencies and NFTs minting new millionaires almost daily, we expect to see comic prices increase as they look for new places to park their money,” Zurzolo said.
