A driver led San Diego police on a pursuit for more than 20 minutes before crashing on southbound Interstate 805 in Sorrento Valley on Sunday evening.
The driver had reportedly ran a red light and made a U-turn on Friars Road near Interstate 15 — and almost hit a patrol car— a little after 7 p.m., Officer John Buttle said.
The officer tried to pull over the car, but the driver did not stop, prompting a pursuit. The driver led police south on I-15 until he exited east on Market Street. The driver then went north on I-805 to the junction with Interstate 5, then exited at Via de la Valle, only to go onto south I-5.
After transitioning to south I-805, the driver crashed near Carroll Canyon Road.
The driver was trapped in the wreckage after the crash.
Firefighters freed the driver and took him to a hospital.
The carpool lanes in both directions on I-805 at Carroll Canyon were closed while the crash was investigated.
The condition of the driver was not immediately known.
